Production meetings and production log

Within our production we kept a log of dates that showed the different tasks completed. You will be able to see the completed work for our production alongside the date and what we did during this day. Below from this point will include the different activities taken for the planning and production of our Single Camera Production.

Thursday 15th of November (All attended)

We discussed as a group what we wanted to include in our 5 minute film. We produced a mind map of ideas and a structure for the video. We then produced a questionnaire to produce primary research. We also wanted to gain some secondary research so that we could get a clearer idea on which idea would be the best. This helped us pick our final idea.

Thursday 22nd November 2012 (All attended)

As a group we sat together and produced the synopsis for our film. The reason why we produced the synopsis was so that we would have a better understanding of the story and what we wanted to include and also the mise-en-scene. We then produced a treatment, mood board and storyboard; we split these activities within the group on the 26th November.

Monday 26th of November (All attended)

We produced a shooting schedule as a group, we set out the dates for the filming, and we did this by finding out when we all are available. We shared out the roles within our group, this helped us to spread out the workload and get all work done quickly and efficiently. We also were able to know what each member of the group was going to participate towards the production.

Thursday 29th November 2012  (All attended)

On this date, our focus was the production of the film. We looked and thought about the locations we wanted to use for our film; below you can see the locations we have chosen and explanation as to why we have chosen those locations. We also auditioned possible actors/actresses for our film. Below you can see a range of individuals we auditioned for the characters we needed. You can see how we narrowed them down by looking at their suitability for the character role. We then moved on to props we would like to use in our film. We produced a risk assessment document and a shooting script to prepare for the filming process and help us keep everything organised. Finally, we made a script for our film.

Thursday 6th of December (All attended)

We started filming and discussed the shots we needed to film. We broke down our film into scenes and decided the locations for each of the scenes. We looked at the shots taken and looked for ways in which we can improve for the next stage of filming. By reviewing the shots, we were able to see what our strengths were and what we needed to work on more.

Monday 17th of December (All attended)

We finished filming and our main priority was to plan out our editing process. We knew that the editing process would take a long time if we all did it together. So, we split the different shots between the group so that we can edit them quickly. We gave the more challenging editing sections to the members of the group who had more knowledge of how to use the software. The rest of the group took on more easier editing roles.

Planning

Thursday 15th November

We discussed as a group what we wanted to include in our 5 minute film. We produced a mind map of ideas and a structure for the video. We then produced a questionnaire to produce primary research. We also wanted to gain some secondary research so that we could get a clearer idea on which idea would be the best. This helped us pick our final idea.

Camera angles and movements

When watching movies, the angle at which a character is shot in the film can affect how we perceive that character. Film directors often choose to shoot characters using different angles in order to present the importance of that person in the film.
Five basic camera angles:

  • Bird’s-Eye View – the camera is placed above the character. This angle is usually used to make a comment on the character or a scene.
  • High Angle – the camera is looking downwards. Used to draw attention to the environment or setting of the scene.
  • žEye-Level – a very common angle used in videos. The camera shot is roughly at the same level an observer would see the scene. They help a story to develop.
  • žLow angles – the camera is looking upwards, it focuses on the size and important of the character. The shot also focuses on the power and authority of the main characters.
žOblique angle – is a shot by tilting the camera. The shot suggests a sense of anxiety and playfulness.
Cameras are moved for a number of reasons and in many ways. Movements can alter the audience’s sense of time, speed and space, follow action of characters, reveal information that was previously off-screen, concentrate the audience’s attention on specific details and emphasise a point of view shot.
Movement of the Camera on a Tripod:
ž

  • Pan – turning the camera left to right, focusing attention on an object or character being followed.
  • žTilt  - pivots the camera upwards or downwards. The shot mimics the sight of the character in point of view shots.
  • žZoom – the camera doesn’t move at all. Zoom focuses on a particular detail.

Movement of the Camera, Camera Fittings and Operator:

  • Tracking - the camera moves to the left or right, often on a pre-laid track or on a specially designed truck. It is used to follow movements across a frame
  • žDolly - movement of the camera towards or from an object or subject. Dollies are often used in point of view shots to give the audience the impression of approaching someone or something with the character.
  • žCrane and helicopter - shots the camera and mounting are free from the ground and can be manoeuvred quite precisely. Crane shots have traditionally been used at the start of  films to move into the action, drawing the audience with it, and at the end of films to draw the audience out of intimate relationships with characters, returning them to their wider environment.
  • žHandheld - the camera is carried by the operator, often creating an uneven movement. These shots allows the operator to follow action very closely, creating a greater sense of immediacy for the audience, and may mimic the movement of a character in point of view shots.
  • žSteadicam - is a camera is placed in a harness worn by the camera operator which “suspends” the camera in such a way as to remove the jerkiness of handheld shots as the operator moves across the ground.

Secondary Research Gained:

To further from our ideas and knowledge for our single camera production, we decided to gain secondary research to gain better understanding of the different films and genres that gained the interest of individuals, below shows the research we gained:

Top Movies of the year -
http://www.the-numbers.com/market/

As part of our secondary research, we researched the what films were the best selling movies of the year from 1995 to 2013. This information helped us to identify the wide range of genres that were included in the most successful movies. Looking at the top movies of interest, we were able use the information to gain better ideas for our production. It also allowed us to take the next step in generating ideas for our single camera production. Looking at the results we gained from our secondary research, we were able to see that the there is a wide range of genres, therefore we moved onto then narrowing these to the different genres of our interest.

We also researched what genres were the most successful and best interested the viewers from 1995 to 2012. By looking at this data we were able to see how much gross income each genre has made and how many movies fall under each genre. This data helped us decide the genres we wanted to choose for our final idea.

My individual idea

My initial idea was that our short film would focus on the hardship and struggle of a couple. A couple both aged 17, are deeply in love with each other. However, their love story isn't so perfect. The parents of both of them know about their relationship but aren’t happy with it.

The parents of the girl have already planned out her future. They have decided who she is going to get married to and want her to become a housewife. She over hears her parents plan and arranges with her boyfriend that they should run away. The parents of both find out that they are running away, as the girl’s father goes through her phone and reads her texts.

He informs the boy’s parents and makes a plan to stop them. However, it doesn't go to plan and the couple hand in hand run away for good.

Ideas generated for Single Camera Production:

Below is a mind map that shows the different genres that we as a group looked at and thought of. We also looked at and decided which genres would be easier and better to use in our film. These were the different genres of and themes of our interest, we used the information we gained from our secondary research to narrow down to our final choice. To further our decision of what we want to do and what idea and genre to choose.

Genre, Ideas & Structure

Monday 19th November 2012
We then gained all our research and initial ideas from this we then decided what genre we were going to do and also made an idea for genre, this was briefly developed by listing the genre we wanted to do and also a list of ideas. We spent around an hour making our decision and making ideas for our production. In order to gain a mixture of ideas for our film, we set a task for 30 minutes and individually developed a structure for our film. After the 30 minutes were up, we sat together and presented our ideas. The ideas that we thought were the best, we put them together to produce a structure for our film.
Below includes our decision for the genre and ideas we developed as a group from our research:

· Action/ Crime
· Within the plot there is the equilibrium of the main character living the life he wants, includes, money, cars, girlfriend,
· He quitting the drug business
· Informs the group he’s leaving
· They blame girl and take action and kidnap her.
· he helper is Adam providing the area that they are in
· Get the girl- kills the drug dealer.

Synopsis, Treatment, Mood Board and Story Board

Thursday 22nd November 2012

As a group we sat together and produced the synopsis for our film. The reason why we produced the synopsis was so that we would have a better understanding of the story and what we wanted to include and also the mise-en-scene. We then produced a treatment, mood board and storyboard, we split these activities within the group on the 26th November.

Synopsis

Its 10.00am on a gloomy wet Monday morning. We meet Shak, a tall handsome young man who walks solemnly through a quiet empty graveyard. He looks up as he approaches a grave and kneels down and places a single rose on a grave.

Shak has a flashback. Shak and an attractive female walk hand in hand through a park on a bright day; they are laughing and smiling at each other’s conversation. They stroll towards the exit of the park when Shak receives a phone call. He stops and turns away from his partner to answer the call. She continues to the steps at the exit and sits to wait for him to finish his call. She pulls out her mobile phone and stares down at the screen. Two men emerge from the exit and run up behind her.

They throw a bag over head and pull her of the bar. She screams for help but Shak is too late and shouts in desperation No! Shak ventures out to find her as he is left with a message indicating the kidnap. He goes to collect the sum of money needed for her retrieval. We are taken to a mysterious door as a knock is made and the bag is placed outside with no figure but the hand being shown. Shak takes the bag he reaches the allocated spot of pick-up to find himself lashing out at Boss, which inflicts into a fight. Ceez and Steel turn their backs on The Boss as they take the money and run. Words are exchanged by Shak and Boss about Ceez and steel that reveals their bond and partnership.

Shak's angry causes him to think irrationally as he pulls out a gun and faces it at the Boss. Warning is made; the trigger is pulled. Shak's ruthless decision sees the end of Rose as she suddenly appears from the car. In seconds of his relief the Boss pulls the trigger to activate the car explosion. This reveals the identities of the mystery characters at the graveyard to the audience.

Treatment

Our single camera production genre is crime and action based. The main themes are love, betrayal and deceit, which will gain interest of our target audience. The production will be aimed towards teenagers and young adults (between 12-25) and is set in an urban environment. The target audience is able to relate to the main production of the single drama, as it is an anti-drug morality, which provides a warning for those whom may inhabit with this aspect of living.

Characters are aged between 16 to 18 years old. The hero is Shak, he is a young male who is trying to escape the evil lifestyle. The lead character is strong and brave, his disruptive behavior causes a stir between the other individuals in the group. He decides to depart from the drug lifestyle and aims to head off to Spain with his girlfriend Rose. His potential in the business of drugs threatens the rest of the group's success. The villain is known as ‘Boss’, he is leader of the drug-dealing group. He is furious of Shak's decisions in departing Coventry, with greed he sets his own plans in preventing this with blackmail and revenge. He ventures out to Kidnap Rose the damsel-in-distress. She is tangled with the danger for love and the blame she gets for driving Shak out of the Coventry.

The film will be a Low-Budget action based movie, and the focus will be placed in creating the effects required. The lighting and camera work will express the atmosphere and lifestyles of the group. The acting will complement well to the Low Budget production, as it will portray the relationships of the characters making the storyline easy to understand.

We are producing a short Crime/action and romance based film, which will be filmed in Coventry; the main locations are Saint Peters Church Graveyard, Primrose Hill Park and an individual's house.

Locations, Casting, Props, Risk Assessments, Shooting Script and Script

Thursday 29th November 2012

On this date, our focus was the production of the film. We looked and thought about the locations we wanted to use for our film, Below you can see the locations we have chosen and explanation as to why we have chosen those locations.

Locations

We have selected the three locations of Saint Peters Church, Primrose Hill Park, Car Park near an individuals house as they are all near each other and are easy to access. This will mean that production in terms of camera production will be less time consuming as the locations and distances are easy to get to.

Location 1 – Saint Peter Church (Graveyard)

The use of Saint Peters Church within our production is that the opening as it fits in with our storyboard. It has building, which also includes a small memorial with gravestones that we are able to use in our production. It is based in Coventry and is considerable near to the other locations therefore making the placement very appropriate within our production.

It includes a graveyard and this will be the best place to record our production, this area with the scenery allows a great opportunity to create an atmosphere. The characters will be introducing themselves within the production as mystery identities. By having gloomy settings it will allow build on the mystery aspect.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Re: Permission to film

I’m writing to you to ask for permission to film within your graveyard. On the 19th of November 2012, as we are media studies students from Sidney Stringer Academy and it is a part of our course to film a short film, we’ve chosen your graveyard as one of our locations. We would much appreciate it, if we were granted permission to use the graveyard within our production.

Yours faithfully

Syranpreet Rai, Zahra Ali, Shamim Miah and Bahno Mirzad

We visited Saint Peters on the 19th of November. A lady on the reception agreed us permission for using their graveyard.

Location 2 – Primrose Hill Pathway & Park

This is the primrose hill street we will use to record Shak going to retrieve the money; this is a great place to record, as it is minutes away from the park from the earlier scene. In addition the narrow path can show the struggle that Shak goes through to get the money from the mystery man.

You are able to see below the location selected to record the kidnap scene within our production we have selected this area, as it is a friendly environment, which Shak and rose are at. The element of surprise is better to take place in the park as it makes it unexpected therefore making our production more dramatic.

The path way will show where the Shak and Rose walking towards the stairs, creating a fun atmosphere. They will be giggling and laughing before the separation takes place at the end of the stairs.

This is the pathway where Shak and Rose will be walking before she gets kidnapped. This angle of shoot will hint out this sense of danger. We can feel this danger as the camera is creeping out towards the characters.

You are able see below the area where Rose will get kidnapped; this is at the end of the park and the steps to get out. The reason for the use of this specific area within the production is because it creates Irony. This being that as soon as she is about to leave the park and the fun atmosphere she will be facing towards danger.

Near Individuals House

This is where the scene of exchange of the bag of money for Rose, it includes the scene for rose death and the fighting that takes between the Boss and Shak.

Character profiles
(Personality traits, background profile and costumes worn by character)

Within the production for our film we decided to insure that our film is at satisfactory level. For the roles allocated within our production, we set up auditions to allow the right actor to be used within our production. Below shows our top actors of choice:

The Hero

One of the characters we had an audition for this role is Shoaib. He presented himself very well to the group and showed that he could be a suitable candidate to play the role of the hero, we did have one problem though at times his acting lacked in showing emotion and he was more suited in the humorous aspects of acting therefore meaning that this could make it harder for this individual to be the Hero within our film.

Another actor we auditioned for the role of the Hero is Gift, he was very good and talented for a role within our production, however the way he presented himself we felt that he was more suited to the role of the villain. He has a very strong personality and is able to project his personality in many ways.

Our Overall Decision from the actors lead to our decision in selecting the following candidate below:

This candidate being Shaukat Saleji, We realised straight away from his audition that he fitted in with the role very well; he presented emotional aspects to his character and was very well suited to the role of the Hero.

The Villain

One of the characters that auditioned for this role is Muddasir, he as a an audition was very excellent, he presented himself well to be one of the bad character within our production and the way he presented and used his words to the audience was very good as it contained manipulation and power making him very suited to the role of the villain.

The final individual who auditioned for the role of a Villain is Gift, during his audition he did very well and presented himself as a worthy candidate within our selection process. During his audition he demonstrated and presented in his acting villain type behaviour which we as a group were very interested in and thought that Gift done this well.

The Damsel in Distress

One of the characters that we as a group auditioned is Henna, we were able to see that she made a great candidate within our production as she presented us with very good set of acting skills.

Another individual we auditioned is Tahira, and she fitted well with the damsel in distress, she also had good acting skills and this was supported by her interest in Expressive Arts.

The final individual we interviewed is shown below this being Syran:

Syran showed great interest in the role of 'Rose'. Her acting skills were fantastic and her appearance really suited the characters attributes. She showed emotion when reading her lines and was able to change her emotions to fit the film effectively.

The Helper

One of the characters we had an audition from is: Anhar

Another character we had an audition from is: Muddasir

We chose Shaukat to be the hero in the film as he showed great acting skills and showed us a wide range of emotions when reading lines from our script. We chose Gift to be the villain as he showed aggression and anger in his actions. He also presented power when reading the lines from the script. We chose Syran to be the damsel in distress, as she showed great emotion and was very enthusiastic. For the role of the helper, we chose Anhar and Kamiul as they both looked great as a pair. They also had great acting skills and complemented each other when acting as a pair.

Shak: WHERE IS SHE? I DON’T WANT TO PLAY ANY GAMES ANYMORE! (Shouting with anger)

Boss: why would you want that slag anyway. That slag took you away from us and the great things you could’ve had. You could’ve had it all.

(Shak reaches to pull the trigger as Boss pulls forward the remote trigger to activate the explosion of the bomb. The song plays while rose is screaming and kicking as Shak pulls the trigger. The boss presses the activation button and an explosion takes place. Shak turns around to realize that Rose was in the car the whole time. Shak screams with disbelief.)

The script has been adjusted while filming.  The actors have improvised some of the lines, this shows realism and shows a continuous flow.

We have used a range of non-diegetic sounds within our single camera film. We have used instrumental music in some of our scenes to add depth and emotion. We have used sound effects such as gunshots, police sirens and an iPhone ringtone.
